“I was attracted to the role on the Conviction Group Board, as I believe if we can educate young people to manage their mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, we will empower them to become more resilient, confident and positive adults,” says Alice.
Alice is currently the Secretary of the Board of the Illawarra Suicide Prevention and Awareness Network, which aims to raise the awareness of suicide prevention and reduce the impact of death by suicide in the Illawarra. She is also a Lifeline telephone crisis support worker, providing assistance for those in emotional distress. “My purpose in life is to make a positive contribution to as many people as I can and I want to be actively involved in creating a more inclusive, kind, authentic and accepting world,” says Alice. |
Empowering youth with the right tools
Starting conversations on mental health and wellbeing amongst high school student is a big part of what Conviction Group’s programs aims to achieve. Alice says these types of conversations with teenagers need to be open and honest, highlighting three key areas.
“The sorts of conversations that should be discussed are firstly the importance of a positive self-image. Having the confidence to avoid people and situations that aren't necessarily right for them, and to find those that are.
“Secondly, critical thinking and being able to understand social media and questioning the validity of what is real and what is perceived. Thirdly, privacy and the repercussions of understanding the sharing of information and personal details on social media.”
Alice is a big believer in providing youth with the relevant tools to help improve both their physical and mental wellbeing.
“The attitude [of society] towards mental health has definitely improved,” says Alice. “When I was younger, mental health was not discussed as openly as it is today. It tended to be something which was ignored. Mental health services were also not widely advertised or available.”

Joining the Board
Alice is excited about joining the Conviction Group team, especially attending the Young Men’s Health Forums, and helping contribute to the charity’s missions as part of the board. Bree Johnston and Marco Capobianco are both Conviction Group board members, and enjoy being able to positively impact the next generation of young people in the community |
“Conviction Group focuses on education,” says Marco. “Education is the key to long term generational change towards wellbeing amongst our young people’
Bree agrees and says it’s exciting to be able to watch the team grow with Alice’s addition.
“I am passionate about the work we do because there has never been a more important time to ensure mental health, especially for our youth, is front and centre in everyone's minds. It’s a joy to be a part of an organisation that puts impact first.”
